Devi

The days of Rajas are at an end, and the 3 days of Satva have started. Your meditations will be especially deep these 3 days… go inwards… do Yoga and chanting, do your Kriya and meditation for longer than normal… Enjoy yourself! (pun intended) :)

Three portfolios have been given to Devi. Defense, Finance and Education and fine arts. The symbolism is absolutely brilliant!

Durga Maa is the fearsome aspect of the Mother Divine. She represents the ferocity of the love that a mother has for her child and the way a mother would protect her child from danger. She represents valour.

She rides a lion. The lion is a savage predator, awesome and magnificient. But also perhaps the laziest of all the wild beasts. If the lion was not lazy, no other species would get any chance at life. He would kill them all. His fecocity, coupled with his laziness makes him the perfect example of how the defences of any country should be. For sure you should have defence capability, and it should be top of the line. But it should be used very, very sparingly, almost lazily! Like the Lion.

Laxmi Maa is wealth, abundance, prosperity. She represents virtues and skill.

Any mother would love to shower her child with these. But she sits on a lotus which is in water. Meaning that wealth and prosperity can be very fleeting. Any moment they could sink! Also the lotus signifies a fully blossomed consiousness and that only such a person is really capable of handling wealth effectively. The finances of a country (or a family for that matter) need to be managed by extremely capable hands, other wise, the wealth (and the country) could go under very fast… (America… You listening to this?! :))

Saraswati Maa is Knowledge. She holds a Veena in one hand and a book in the other, and she sits on a firm rock. This means that Knowledge should be complete and rounded, with the fundamentals and concepts as hard as rock. The book represents the logical aspect and the Veena the musical, emotional aspect of Knowledge, both have to be given for a person’s mind to really bloom. Education needs to be like this, rock solid basics and fundamentals along with logic and reason, tempered with music and emotion. Then learning and education become truly effective. Like in an Art of Living course! :)

She rides a swan. A swan is supposed to be able to separate milk from water. Meaning when you have the finnese in the mind and intellect that good education can give you, you are able to discriminate with ease… you gain the ability to make good decisions. Also when you have the Knowledge, then like the swan you can leave the earth and water and soar in the skies of infinity…

Knowledge and education in any country have to be given utmost importance. All the problems that our beautiful planet is facing are simply because of lack of education or wrong education… Saraswati Maa’s benign presence is sorely needed…

This is the way that a child needs to be bought up. Valour, virtues, skills, abundance and Knowledge. This is the way a country can become truly great. Awesome defenses used extremely sparingly. Wealth managed capably so that bountiful prosperity dawns on it’s citizens. And Education and fine arts given the highest priority. This brings out the discriminatory powers in its citizens and that country then would be virtually crime free!

The nine days and nights of Navaratri celebrate the Mother Divine in all Her awesome, ferocious, loving, benign, abundant, magnificent, brilliant glory. And nowhere is that more evident than in the Bangalore Ashram where we the devotees get to bask in the all enveloping presence of our beloved Guruji who effortlessly becomes (is?!) the very embodiment of Devi…
