Guruji’s Photo

One of our teachers in the US got asked this question on a course:

What does Sri Sri think of his picture being displayed so prominently with a candle as it if were a religious shrine?

Here is my answer to it :)

Its an Indian tradition to honour the One who has given us this great Knowledge like this … i know of course, that this is not India, but Yoga, Meditation, Pranayama, all the things that we have done hereĀ  (on the course) are very much Indian, and so to honour that Person and that tradition, we keep this little photo of His and the candle. The candle signifies the light of Knowledge burning away the ignorance. It signifies purity of consciousness.

As far as Sri Sri is concerned, He doesn’t care whether His photo is displayed or not, whether a candle is there or not… all He says is Be happy and make others happy … but the candle and the photo definitely make me (bawa) happy … and now that you know what it means, it should make you happy too :)

Jai Gurudeva!

love

bawa

Kartik – let us not generalize. Being Gurudev’s devotee for a long time, I have often had to answer such questions from Indians.

      • Janardhan says:

Would just like to add that such questions come mostly out of a consciousness that is STIFF and refuses to see the divinity in others.

        • Bawa says:

Not really … it could just come from someone who is curious and skeptical … i would have asked the same question 20 years ago :)

wow bau so true that is.. in india we always honour our gurus or tecahers be it spiritual or otherwise.. we even honour our parents the same way we honour our spiritual gurus….afterall guruji says as long as one can honour their parents and masters truly from their heart and souls it really doesnt matter if we have a picture physically or have it deeply embeded in our minds and souls… jgd

I keep the picture as a mark of honor to my teacher. It is a personal thing :)

Btw, even in the US, government buildings have pictures of Lincoln, Washington etc on the walls. In corporations, there are pictures of founder/ceo. In universities, there are pictures of professors from the department etc.

Bao such a precise answer. Once a school principal had told, you can conduct the course but without the photo. Our volunteers had not agreed, i guess out of love and respect to guruji i guess. Wish they also read the blog.
