The Art of Living and The Times Foundation have mutually appealed to the public to sign their joint petition to airlines to make flights meat free…
Here is the letter that will be going to all airlines…
Global warming has reached alarmingly dangerous proportions and governments all over the world now are taking measures to contain it. It is our collective responsibility to join in these efforts in all our capacities to save our precious planet.

Greener Flights Please!
A 2006 United Nations report summarized the devastation caused by the meat industry by calling it “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” Everybody today is aware that the environmental cost for producing a meat-based diet is monumentally higher than a vegetarian one. These costs have escalated to enormous proportions and now pose as very disturbing details.
Additionally, more and more people are increasingly becoming aware of the unhygienic and cruel practices involved in producing meat. Apart from the horrible treatment given to animals reared for meat, they are also injected with harmful chemicals and hormones to add bulk to their bodies, which show strong signs of being poisonous for human consumption. Consequently, health agencies are also recommending people to reduce meat consumption.
It has been established that if a small fraction of the population brings down the meat consumption, by even a little bit, it will do wonders for the environment. Leading researchers all over the world have started recommending a vegetarian diet. Therefore, we would like to solicit your support in declaring all flights meat free. Such a policy change would not only benefit the airline industry, by cutting cost and increasing profit margins, but also the environment and is both economically prudent and ecologically responsible.
It has become imperative that all of us attend to this issue. We, therefore, request all Airways to serve completely vegetarian meals during flights. To increase awareness among people, we have launched a massive signature campaign in support of this drive.
We look forward to a positive response from you.
Warm Regards,
The Art of Living India & Times Foundation.

Jai Gurudev Bawa!!!
What a lovely action. It certainly makes big news. However, I’ll have to see how the tainted media industry considers this report. Would be grateful to know whom should I contact for the original copy of the letter… and speak to for bringing this news out in ET/TOI.

What I was thinking …
Ha
If people are not gona listen to this….I am waiting to spread a small roumour- that eating nonveg in a plane increases cancer risks …coz anynow eating processed meat does increase cancer risk. so you see …Anything for a good cause
Great work!
I signed it too
Dear all, I wish to share a sad experience on a recent flight
[ IC-109 (11th Dec - Mumbai to Bangalore)].
It goes as follows. I was coming from Mumbai to Bangalore in Indian Airlines flight. The Air-hostess served us meal. At first she asked us for our preference for Veg or Non-Veg. By God’s grace I heard it properly (as it was too noisy inside) and i ordered for Veg, but an uncle sitting beside me by mistake ordered for non-veg as he had not heard the hostess say that she had non- veg in her hand and so the pure vegetarian was easily turned non- vegetarian. On completing his meal he came to know that he had had non-veg and tears rolled down from his eyes, and he lamented before me. With a heavy heart he prepared for his work as we were about to land in Bangalore. The sadder thing was the air- hostess appologised for this mistake with a plain “SORRY”. What must we do for preventing such mistakes is future. “Ban talking” in the airplane or “ban non-veg”.
This incidence could have happened with me if i had not heard that word VEG OR NON-VEG properly…But thank god…as with Master’s grace i was saved once again. So we all should join this campaign and cease non-veg serving hereafter in flights and trains. Let’s be together and serve for a global warming free world…”Sangha-chadwam”
Yes
I was among the first to sign at winter break, but can we sign again?
P.S. I wish I could meet you on the 20th Jan but I have been told its teachers only
Already Signed!!!!
Wonderful Iniciative
Can this initiative be started for indian railways too ?
it will be sent to them as well
Dear Bawa
Considering the fact that agriculture and foodgrain production results in massive destruction of forests and aids in global warming, should we stop eating vegetables and foodgrains also ?
Also, vegetarian fanaticism has resulted in non-vegetarians being treated as some sort of neo-untouchables amongst the vegetarians in the society. Why can’t there be a more mature and balanced approach towards food.
Meat contains essential proteins and nutrients not found in vegetables and vegetables contain nutrients and fibre that are not found in meat.
In essence, meat and vegetables are complementary to each other, why not allow people to balance their diet ?
Why impose this Brahmin-Bania-Gujju-Marwari brand of moral values on all people ?
I have written and spoken about this countless number of times… the facts speak for themselves, if you are willing to listen
Actually i think i am going to do a series of articles on this thing, so that once and for all everything is in one place and all you guys can look it up and read it up…
Please do so Bau. And if possible, with answers to the typical questions asked by ppl in this whole food habits debate.
Already Signed this was required…. I Am Proud.
Joygurudev….
Jai Gurudev Bawa!!! I have submitted my Vote. Also can we have a dedicated Yahoo group/google for all those who have done yes plus so that we can reach all at one go? I dont know if there is one.
WAY TO GO!!
Dear Bawa
The meat industry in India is worth $ 300 million only and is un-organized with mainly Muslims and Dalits running their own small businesses in localities and neighbourhoods.
The liquor industry in India on the other hand, is worth $ 25 billion, very organized and politically powerful, and invloved in all kinds of environmentally and socially unethical practices.
Liquor barons like Vijay Mallya and liquor party throwers like Times of India’s Vineet Jain are AoL devotees also. Why don’t you for a change take on these corruptors of public values than taking away the livelihood of millions of poor Muslims and Dalits ?
Maybe if the poor Muslim and Dalit butchers of India had done Art of Living courses like these rich businessmen, then perhaps you would have thought more benevolently about them.
You think we dont talk extremely strongly about liquor and smoking?!
Please come and do a course… and if more people keep eating meat, there wont be a planet left for all these people to have a livelihood… you simply dont realise the harm that each and every plate of meat thats being eaten around the world causes to the ecology…
I am a parsi, and was born into a meat eating family… but the entire family has gone veg, my sister’s wedding was a meat AND booze free event… when we realised the kind of destruction that was happening in the name of eating meat.
like i said earlier, facts talk, are you willing to listen?!
And, i will not be publishing any more such rubbish comments from you any more… i have a tolerance limit too
Jai Gurudeva!
