Classy Illusion

I found this on my stumbles on the WWW… and just had to share it with all of you!
The Squares marked A and B are exactly the same colour!!!

To check this out, just copy paste the image into any image software… then cut paste a tiny part of square A into a new window, and then copy paste a tiny part of square B into another window… check out both the colours, you will see that amazingly, unbelievably they are the same!!!

Seeing is Believing? Not quite huh?! 🙂

Happy Birthday Guruji!!

3 months ago, Guruji called me and dinesh and told us, that we should be teaching thousands of people, that we were wasting our time teaching small courses of a few hundred 🙂
and so was born the Utsav Phenomenon!

We put together a course, which could be taught to thousands of people at a time, modified a few of the original games heavily and decided to include rocking satsangs as part of the course…

The result? Pure Magic!!

I have always wondered what to give Guruji on His birthday every year… i think this year from the entire YES!+ Team, we can very proudly give Guruji His B’day present!

On the eve of Guruji’s 52nd B’day, 10,000+ new people have done the Utsav course. 10,000+ new people will bask in His Grace! 10,000+ new people have got this precious Knowledge!!

In just 3 months since Utsav was born, the YES!+ Team of India (joined by Phillip and Amanda from the US and Alex from Brazil) has managed to teach 10,000+ young people. Dinesh and I taught 7 Utsav Act I courses: 2 in Mumbai, and 1 each in Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Jalandhar and Bangalore. Saleel and Nanda rocked in Indore…

Our collective Sankalpa had been 10,000+ till July, but i guess Guruji wanted His B’day present earlier than that 🙂

Happy Birthday our dearest Guruji!!

bawa, dinesh, The YES!+ Team…
and all of us…

Guruji does His bit!

Bangalore Utsav:

On the day one of the Utsav of Bangalore, 2 hours or so before we were ready to begin, the election commissioner suddenly decided that we cannot hold the program in the ground that it was scheduled to be held… They got an order from the Bangalore Municipal Corporation canceling the course… Turned out that the ground was adjacent to the National College where all the ballot boxes of the upcoming Bangalore Elections would be kept, and such a huge gathering was a “security” threat or something like that…

Police were not allowing any workers or volunteers to do anything on the ground, so the pandal was not completed, sound was not ready, stage was in a shambles… All those last minute things that are to be done, couldn’t be done… We had close to a 1000 registrations on the course, our team of volunteers and teachers had been working day and night, really hard, for almost 3 months to get the show together and it was about 10 minutes to 5:00 pm , the time Utsav was supposed to start and people were streaming in…

To top all that, the skies were overcast, and there was a faint drizzle of rain as well, threatening to turn into an all out shower… This is the middle of summer… 8th May!! Some confusion with the Bangalore weather Angels for sure! 🙂

At 5 minutes to 5:00 pm, after a flurry of useless phone calls to “concerned” authorities for the past 2 hours (and 1 phone call to Guruji explaining the situation), Dinesh(?) managed to convince the BMC people at the ground itself to let us do the course for 3 days, Thursday, Friday and Sunday (suggestion from Guruji), we thought we will do Saturday at the Ashram… Saturday being the day of the election.

In 15 Minutes miraculously, the stage, the pandal, the sound, the video… everything simply came together, everyone was registered in and seated and ready to begin… and we started the course only 10 minutes late, at 5:10 pm!

The Election Commissioner had somehow been appeased, how about the Rain Gods? A steady drizzle, very gentle continued for some time… Dinesh mentioned its the God’s who were showering their Blessings on all of us… Dinesh and i were fervently praying to Guruji to make it stop raining… It never turned into an all out shower… BUT, it did keep drizzling off and on…

Then it was time for Sudershan Kriya. We told all the participants to pray that it would not rain while we were doing Kriya and meditating… As soon as we chanted Om to get ready to start Kriya. All the rain stopped. Completely. And stayed stopped throughout the hour long Kriya and meditation!

The pandal was in the huge Basvangudi Grounds. We had not cordoned off the entire ground to save costs :). We had just a 1000 registrations, so had cordoned off an area to seat the 1000 comfortably…

For the entire hour of the Kriya, it was not raining at all in the cordoned off area. Just a few feet away, on the grounds, on either side of the pandal it was raining… and about 500 meters away from the pandal it was raining heavily!!

When everyone had finished the Kriya and were read to go home, they found the ground surrounding the pandal to be wet and sticky with mud… just the pandal was absolutely dry…

I remember once Guruji saying that when you are doing something good, nature will bend to cooperate with you… I have a feeling, Guruji gently nudges nature to her bit… by doing His bit!

Banana and Pecan Cake

Finally!! a no sugar, no white flour recipe that works really well!!
This recipe really gets your hands dirty… you have been warned 🙂

You will need:

4-5 medium sized ripe bananas
1 cup Maple Syrup (You could even experiment with honey and let me know the result)
1/2 cup butter (cold butter from the fridge is best, or room temperature is ok too, dont melt)
1 Tablespoon Vanilla Essence

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp fine salt
2 tsps baking powder

1 cup pecans (chopped), you can replace with walnuts if you wish.
1/2 cup dried raisins

Clean your nails, preferably trim them 🙂 and then wash and dry your hands,

Pre heat the oven to 250 deg
Sift the flour, salt and baking powder at least 3 times through a fine sieve. Keep Aside.

Mash up the bananas really well with your hands, so little pieces are still there. Add the butter and again mash it into the banana mixture, add maple syrup and vanilla essence, and with your hands blend the whole thing properly. It should smell gorgeous: bananaey and mapley with a hint of vanilla…

Now to this add the flour, baking powder and salt mixture and again with your hands mix it really well.. Do not use an electric blender or a spoon. Use your hands and squeeze and blend and make the flour and banana mixture into a nice homogeneous mass. It will be smelling delicious, and will be gooey and will have dropping consistency…

Add the chopped pecans or walnuts and raisins to this mixture, reserve a small handful to garnish. Mix the nuts and raisins in well.

Lightly grease with butter a baking tray and pour the mixture into it.

Put to bake for 40ish minutes. See below.

About half way through at approx 25 minutes, when the mixture has firmed up a bit, you can optionally give it a milk bath. Using some a liquid which is 1 part milk, 2 parts water, just brush the top of the cake lightly and quickly and replace into the oven. This just gives a very nice glaze effect to the cake. It shines when it is done 🙂

Remove from the oven. Let it cool just a bit before cutting it up and serving. We had it just like that, with chocolate sauce, with it drenched in maple syrup, with some honey, and with french vanilla ice cream!

Its a really simple cake to make and we had lots of fun to making it! This cake is enough for about 5-7 people…

QnA – 9

Q:I have everything in life. Guruji, wonderful parents, enough money, a nice job, Seva, Satsang…… But i feel something missing in this entire picture. I don’t quite know what it is and so i cannot act upon it. It’s as if there is some quest in my life. But i cannot understand what to do. This is not bringing me any un-happiness, but its playing on my mind for quite some time now. Do you know what it might be?

A: Sincerely do stuff for others, sincerely think how can I contribute? And then get out there and do it… this brings meaning and fulfillment… Also do as many Adv courses as you possibly can ?

Q: I face a lot of resistance from my Dad{ a non- Believer of God} against AOL and Guruji. He sometimes says nasty things to Guruji which results in Bitter arguments between Both of Us!! PLs. Help!!

A: Tell your dad that since India is a free country, he has a right to ignorance! And that you respect it… anytime he wants some Knowledge, he can come for an Art of Living course ?

Q: Bau most of my friends{ AOL and non- AOL both} come to with their problems. I try to console them or give them solutions according to whatever AOL knowledge I follow and which works for me!! But They remember me only when they are in Problem not when they are enjoying their lives!! I feel I have turned into some counselor who is always surrounded with people with negativity!! First, I used to get too involved in their problems and get sad at times but now with regular Kriya I’m safe!! Bau now I feel I should just stop giving them solutions and let them do whatever they feel is right. But then I feel this is my little Seva and I’m answerable to Guruji!! I’m a stronger Believer of Karma and aim at doing Good Karma always!!

A: Here is what I do:
Non AOL friends with problems: Their major problem is that they don’t have AOL in their lives… So, I patiently hear them out, usually this solves their issues and if it doesn’t, I gently point them in the direction of the nearest Art of Living course ?…
AOL people with problems = Irregularity with Sadhana, or almost no Seva and Satsang… point them in the right direction ?. Get them on an Adv course and/or involved in some Seva project or the other, could be as simple as organizing a course…
With both these types of people, usually just listening to them solves stuff for them ?

Q: I am a person of extremely Low confidence have a stammering problem. I need a girl friend. No one is interested in me.

A: Even you don’t seem to be interested in yourself! You don’t love yourself, and you expect someone else to love you?! Stop this I have low confidence and stuff like that… Look in the mirror every morning and say to the reflection I LOVE YOU!!!
And so what if you stammer?! Rashmin one of our best YES!+ teachers used to stammer a lot… now he is completely over it. No one would believe that he ever had that problem…
Repeat a few YES!+ courses, go on a DSN… Pray
Relax and Breathe…
Jai Gurudeva!

Q:Jai Guru Dev,
I have passed my SyBscIT from Usha Pravin Gandhi College of management i.e in mithibhai this year Now the problem is in our third year we have option for subjects b/w advanced java and web designing not many are opting for adv java Becoz it is difficult to score but is in demand in the market and has a good amount of earning. The thing is that i want to opt for web design because it is quite interesting, creative and scoring of course. But whenever i share this idea with others people they suggest me to opt for adv java because market needs such candidates see i dont have much interest in the subject and money is not at all an issue .YES money is an imp factor to live , even to do seva we need money but what if we dont get satisfaction with our work at the end of the day? plz guide me to over come this turmoil situation plz ?
looking forward for your reply

A: Do both!! Take the course in java for the money, and read up on the net, sneak into a few lectures on the course in web design and learn that as well!! Then you will have the qualification needed to earn good money, as well as the capability to do what you love to do, which also has the potential of earning money ?

Q: How do i handle my mind after hearing my mother telling me not to do various things (like traveling for seva)since she went to an astrologer(whatever he says happens …we have experienced) and he said that it is bad time for me as i will fall ill and should not travel and be at home……i also wanted to know since Guruji is there with us can such negative things happen? please let me know

A: When it’s night, the stars shine and we can see and feel their light. But even though the stars are very much there during the daytime, can we see their light?
Same way, astrological stuff may affect you, when you are not on the path, not doing Sadhana and Seva, but when you are regular with sadhana, Seva and Satsang and the Grace of the Guru is strong with you, all the planetary influences have as much effect on you as the starlight in the afternoon!

Q: I am very interested in working on one of my academic work
It is a big task requiring at least 2 months of concentrated effort.
I need to focus.
Although my mind does not wander, I am also not able to focus. I feel as if I my mind is “walking around the lake instead of taking a plunge into it”. I am confident that I will be able to do the work, but I am not able to achieve that single-minded focus.
How to achieve that “meditative focus” or “single-mindedness” about this work?
Any light?

A: Do you love your work? Once you fall in love with something or are passionate about it, focus comes all by itself. There is nothing to do! and the decision to like something is totally yours… get it?!

Q: Hi bawa, i am of 24 yrs old male, i started loosing my hair for few years. i am scared that i will loose my entire hair in a few years. When i saw both of u i was surprised to see u have long and dense hair. So i want to have hair as healthy as u. I will be happy if u share tips of having healthy hair, any yoga techniques, breathing exercise and diet.

A: The fear of loosing your hair makes you loose your hair… Who cares whether you have hair or not?! You just become a good human being and that’s enough… and you will be surprised how your hair fall reduces or vanishes completely once you just don’t care about it and focus on more important stuff like doing your Kriya and Seva and Satsang!

Q: i am Harsha and i am doing my first year B.E in bits-pilani, goa. So i stay in a hostel and i have completely screwed up my sleeping habits here. i go to sleep at 2 in the night and get up quite since we don’t have any attendance system here. so how do i get back to a healthier sleeping pattern? i have tried going to sleep early but it just doesn’t work.

A: Get up every morning latest by 6:00 am. Regardless of when you sleep. You will automatically sleep earlier after 5-7 days of doing this… Don’t drink any tea or coffee.

Q: Irritation while chanting OM. i have done my art excel when i was 13 yrs old in 2001, from then i had a problem whenever i chant om i just cant sustain the irritation. its everywhere in the body
Even during the utsav act one from 24 -28 apr in Mumbai, same thing happened. It happenes every time i chant it…
plz help

A: Doesn’t matter. You simply relax and do some alternate nostril pranayama before you chant and then again after you chant and it should become fine. Ask any Art of Living teacher to teach you the alternate nostril Pranayama if you don’t know how to do it… Before chanting do at least 8-10 rounds, you can do fewer after chanting.

Q: A wish at least initiate call from my boyfriend Yogesh and i shall take care of the rest please for the last time initiate the call from him please help me Bawa i need my Love Yogesh please i want him back.

A: Whenever you ask for a wish from any Rishi or Guru or teacher or saint or the universe, always ask for what you want … or Better!
So your question should be let me get a phone call from Yogesh or better!!
Pray with your heart, and you will get it! ?

Q: i am in love with a girl for over 6 years who has recently become an AOL teacher. I have been her steady friend all along and have seen her move between relationships that has always brought more pain to her. She always shared her thoughts for those relationships. Clearly she sees me as a confidante and a good friend but she also knows that i love her. I have on my part always maintained myself as a good friend above anything else and have tried to be dispassionate about my feelings for her, though longing has always been the dominant feeling. It is through her that i got introduced to Guruji, AOL and subsequently YES+ so i am eternally grateful to her for that.

Last year when i felt a magical moment of Love, i proposed to her to marry me. However she had just come off a relationship (about 4-5 months) and she felt i was ‘taking a chance’ because i knew she was single. I felt so bad that i had thoughts of cutting off all relationship with her after that. But the moment she called again, all those ‘parting’ thoughts vanished completely. We are back to being good friends again although my Love for her has never died. I have never again uttered a word about the past. I don’t want to convince her for convincing sake and i can’t look at any other girl without comparison. The past few days have been troubling me a lot and i can’t even fathom a reason for it. What do i do to remove any thoughts of loving her and have some peace of mind because i never get the feeling that she will eventually love me with thoughts of getting married. I am regular in my Sadhana, Seva and Satsang. I know it’s a long personal question but i would really like to know your advice. I have stopped short of posting this question many times. Please help.

A; I would suggest, come clean. Tell her about your feelings for her, tell her you are not taking a chance or anything and ask her sincerely if she would want to commit to a long term relationship with you… Then if you clear that stage, both of you go to Guruji and ask for His blessings…
Things should work out, and like I mentioned above, when you pray, ask for her love… or better! ?

Q: bawa!! jai gurudeva!
i did my utsav act1 for the first time with u in mumbai in the month of feb,, as soon as my course was over i recommended all my friends to do the course with u,, anyways but there is this friend of mine who is really good at heart,, when i asked him to do the course first he started wid all bahanas tht hes an aethist and he doesnt believe in these things and all blah blah blah,,, then i told him taht u don’t know wats AOL then how cannot he believe in something about which he has no idea at all..??
finally he agreed to do the course.. and i was really amazed to see as the days were passing by he got more excited about the course and all..!! and i was like chal iska kaam toh ho gaya!! 😀 i was really happy to see his eagerness to do the course..
until one day wen i went to his place with the course form and to collect money, wen his sister in law who is quite dominating in the entire family straight away denied him to do the course saying its all rubbish and waist of time and fraud business… MY GOD!! there was so much of negetivity in her,, and she asked me not to “brainwash” him and myself and get involved into these things.. i told her that there’s so much of seva involved and other aspects, and AOL is not binded by any one religion its about learning good things from all the religions and is much more than that which one has to do the course to get that spectacular experience,,(though her problem wasn’t with AOL due to any religious issues..)
but it was all in vain,, i told my friend that I’ll pay for his course but his bhabhi has simply asked him not to talk to me and all..
its sad bawa that inspite of his willingness to do the course he isn’t able to do now…. and even more sad that people have such wrong stupid pre concieved notions about something which they don’t know at all… haa!! GURUJI SAVE THAT FEMALE!! lol heehee
but tell me bawa now what should i do to make my friend do the course? again he had a talk with his bhabhi but she simply refused and said no further talks on this issue..
damn!! tough people do exist in this world!! lol heehehe

jai gurudeva!! 🙂

A: I am glad you are laughing about it. Tell your friend to simply come and do the course. And say sorry to the bhabhi later! ?Maybe then even she will come for the course… if she is as crazy as you make her out to be, God help the teacher!
Seriously though, He will have to take that step… how long is he going to listen to someone who is passing opinions about something that she has no idea about?!

Q: Dearest Bau and Dineshanna,
Karnataka elections are around the corner. Guruji’s pointer is to vote for candidates who uphold Dharma (best translation that I can come up with – the holistic good of society at large).
Now there’s this candidate in my constituency, who has done a LOT of good work. Thanks to his efforts in and out of office, we have exceptionally good roads, sidewalks, parks and greenery, cultural events, museums, etc. It would be hard to find a politician with a comparable visible impact on a constituency. And to top it all, the guy ensured that we have a permanent place for AoL courses, and has directed his resources towards organizing our satsangs. So what’s the problem?
He belongs to a party that does uphold Dharma. Divisionary policies and propagation of reservations are among a host of reasons why a vote for that party is not in the holistic interest of our nation at large.
This is a consequence of the funny ‘indirect democracy’ system that we have – are we voting for an individual? Or for a party? Until the system is transformed (it will, by our efforts), we are left with this: where does the compass of Dharma point? (I guess this is what they call Dharm Sankat!)
In my specific case, I’m not expecting a ready-made solution, but I’d love to hear your views on this. Plus, all your readers are going to face similar situations, sooner or later…
Jaya Gurudeva!

A: “Politicians are like diapers, both need to be changed often and usually for the same reason!” – Robin Williams
I think that pretty much sums up the answer to your question ?. Don’t keep any one party in power too long, power corrupts… unless of course, that party has deeply ingrained spiritual values… but I don’t know of any such party in India (or anywhere else in the world for that matter)… soooo… read the line above again.
We need more and more good people to get into politics, so that more and more good can be done for the country and the world!
And people like us have better choices…

Q: bau i think that though laziness can be a reason for not doing our work properly but i found that for me feeling disinterested came from meditation. when i meditate with an attitude of nothingness it kinda manifests in my general life. how to overcome this feeling after meditation. one of my friend who has done the course said that he doesnt feel like doing anything after kriya. i also agree to that. it brings such contentment that i like to be with myself for a while.

A: Definitely be with yourself for a while. Then get out there and do work! Do not make Kriya, meditation and any other spiritual practice an excuse for your own unwillingness to work and/or laziness!
The Knowledge on the course and the techniques taught can only increase your passion for life!

Q: jai gurudev
i have done yes+ course n im in mental stress abt love n family n frienzs i didn’t kwon what i do?am going to mad i think so. what i do?n im not so confident abt my carrier.

A: You know if you really want an answer to that, the least you could do would be write out the question with proper spellings, grammar and punctuation! Do remember that you are typing out a question in an email, not sending an SMS.
Please resend the question with correct syntax and maybe I will answer it!

Many ways…

Another Question:

i did my yes plus in january last year, and did yes++ at hrishikesh, YES+DSN and advance courses recently in delhi. yes+ truly transformed my life and brought me really closer to myself, and changed such things in my life that i could not even think of. I am regular with kriya from the time I did it in course for the first time.

My question is, during the course of my being associated with AOL, i came accross, a lot of other spiritual missions, like osho, Scientology, Buddhism, etc. These took my fancy as well.
i did scientology book translations to earn money for my DSN,and got to know about it. one of my friend is closely associated with osho, and lot of people in my hostel chant mantras ,that is follow buddhism.even though i’m firmly connected with AOL, still i feel a pull towards these
disciplines. i realise that all of them say almost the same thing just in a diffrent manner. but my confusion really bothers me,because i keep getting diverted to them all the time. please help me and suggest to me how to deal with this as it causes a lot of unrest in me.
eagerly waiting for your reply…

My Reply:

Aren’t there many schools and colleges in your city?
Don’t they teach almost exactly the same thing?
Did you goto ALL of them?! 🙂

Respect all, follow one! is the formula for success in Spirituality 🙂

Btw, Art of Living, doesn’t contradict any belief system and will only enhance your experience with any other technique…

Someone asked Guruji, How can i always be happy?
Drop the always, then you will be happy! and then He added. all ways do not lead you, only ONE way can lead you…

Don’t get into the habit of Spiritual Shopping… its not good for you, it will only confuse you and tear you up… That “pull” you feel is only your mind refusing to settle down, which is the point of any sort of spirituality… stick to one path, one technique and let your mind really relax 🙂

Keep Breathing…

Why Veg?

A participant on the Bangalore Utsav wrote…

Hi dear Bawa!

This is Pratap who is doing Utsav course presently in Bangalore…I got pretty inspired by you and I hope to carry on applying the things you have taught us within these few days. But I have few doubts on the arguments to justify the reasons for not taking non veg, and tea coffee.
I myself don’t take any non-veg or alcohol or even tea coffee….but to convince people not to take them I fail to a certain extent.
Here are some arguments they through at me and I would be happy if you clarify those.
  • The chicken are made to be eaten…otherwise their number will grow in such a proportion that it will destroy the balance of earth. If you don’t destroy them they will eat up every thing any ways…
  • If you tell egg is a non veg then why do you take milk then…that is also another animal product and also most of the eggs you take do not have fertilizing power…hence actually you don’t kill any future chicken also…
  • Why should we avoid Tea and Coffee…as they are also some tree’s product….completely vegetarian..

My reply:

1. chicken are grown on factory farms… no chicken that we eat is “wild”. Read up to see under what atrocious conditions these poor birds are literally manufactured… if people stop eating chicken or for that matter meat, millions upon millions of acres of land that is used to make food for animals could be used for humans or could be returned to their original forest state making bigger lungs for the planet to breathe, besides millions of tonnes of animal waste (shit, urine, etc) that is regularly dumped into rivers and seas would be eliminated… to give you an idea:

The US has farmland that is the size of the entire Indian subcontinent!! 8/10th to 9/10th of this land is used to grow feed for animals… can u imagine? the US actually imports food grain for human consumption… in the US annually 15 billion animals are processed (grow and butchered) for human consumption… 99.99% of these are factory produced… so in a nutshell, if we stop eating meat, balance will not be destroyed, it will be regained! We are loosing about 1 acre of rain forest almost every few minutes to create grazing lands for animals who other people eat… so many species of animals, insects, birds and trees have gone extinct, and we DONT know how to get them back… movies like Jurassic park not withstanding!

Aquifers are huge underground water storages, US and India have the biggest in the world, and because of animal farming in both these countries, and indiscriminate use of this water, we have managed to deplete (there is not enough rain water going in, and too much water being pumped out, as well as huge amounts of toxic waste being dumped in rivers and oceans) in less than 60 years, what nature had made for 5 million years… acres and acres of land have been desertified… where there was once luch green forest, not there is cracked, parched earth…

right now, because of insensitive idiots who eat meat, and profit making bottom line focused buffoons who make this meat, a huge percentage of humanity is either dying of hunger and hunger related diseases, and another huge percentage is really suffering from over eating and obesity related diseases!

How about fish? Mass fishing has destroyed the ocean ecology, only 20%of the fish caught are fit for human consumption, rest are just dumped back in the ocean after they are dead… these fish are caught by trawlers the size of a football field, and they scour the deep seas to get to the fish… other fish are grown on factory farms, where they are fed a dangerous cocktail of chemicals to give them colour, or make them grow faster, or resistant to disease because of over crowding… and they are also fed fish which are farmed from the ocean… The ocean ecology is very very fragile and thru this mass fishing and factory fish farms, humans have managed to make many oceanic flora and fauna already extinct!

2. It has been argued that milk is also not good for you, you are right, that milk is also an animal product… however over here i bow down to the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda which says milk is ok… PROVIDED it comes from free range cows, not from factory cows… i myself have hardly any dairy… mostly soy products, also milk and milk products provide the body with Vitamin B12, which is not available in any plant product… btw, an excellent source for omega 3 is flaxseed oil instead of fish…

3. tea and coffee is definitely not non veg, but they are stimulants and not so good for your body in the long run… a bit of tea and coffee now and then is absolutely ok 🙂 … however, they do get in the way of you having a good experience during meditation and for sure will affect your ability to focus and concentrate… however like i said, once in a while, now and then tea and coffee is absolutely fine, and when i say tea i mean our indian chai, which is not so good for you… herbal tea of any sort can be therapeutic 🙂

SO PLEASE!! STOP EATING NON VEG FOOD!! and tell others, cajole others, to stop as well… this is one of the biggest steps we can take towards a greener, more humane, more healthy lifestyle and planet!!

You may read up books by John Robbins on this subject, they are very well written… as well as watch the IMAX movie the Blue Planet

Dr. D.V. Pai

IITB: Third Semester:

Along came a subject called Real Analysis: I used to hate that subject, the last time i had studied it for my bachelors, had an extremely sucky prof, who managed to make everyone in the class detest the subject… I was a fool, i actually hated the prof, and managed to transfer the hatred of the prof to the subject…

A Dr. D.V. Pai was going to teach Real Analysis to us, i hated the subject, very bad memories of it… needless to say, i didn’t attend any lectures.

It was mid semester exam time… i got 5 or 6 on 30 in RA…

One sunny afternoon, i get a phone call in my hostel. It was Dr. Pai. Could i please come and see him in his office soon? My heart was beating quite wildly, while we fixed up to meet within the next hour or so… I always like to get unpleasant things over as soon as possible. Shaved, Showered, put on some (relatively) clean clothes, did Kriya and walked to Maths Department, each step making me more and more apprehensive about the firing i was about to get… what he would say, and then what excuse i would give, etc, playing havoc in my mind… “Live in the present moment” did flash a few times… didnt help much though :)…

There was a storm in my mind as i climbed up the stairs to Dr. Pai’s office. I said Jai Gurudev a few times in my head and knocked on the door… Come in Mr. batliwala. His voice was very pleasant. Some hope flickered and as i entered and saw him smile as he looked up from some papers. Somehow he managed to put me at ease in the first 10 seconds that i was there in his office… Please sit down… What he said to me afterwards is kind of etched in my memory…

He said it gently, slowly and matter of factly:

In the 30 years that i have taught here, i have never failed a student, because i have always known that there is no such thing as a bad student in IITB, only a bad teacher. If a student does badly, its the teacher who could not ignite the passion for the subject in the student.

I do not expect you to come to my lectures. But i do expect you to know your subject. You have not done well in the midsems, so clearly you cannot do this on your own. i loved the way you play the piano… (He had heard me during PAF!) Someone who can play so well can easily learn Real Analysis…

Even more gently:

Will you please give me a chance to teach this subject to you?

By this time, my eyes were wet. He smiled a big smile and sighed. Will you have a cup of tea?

I will come to each and every lecture sir i promised, and i did for the rest of the semester, and his eyes always twinkled when he saw me… We shared a secret!

After all these years, if you are reading this, Dr. Pai, please know that you were one of the big reasons i stuck to it there at IITB and completed my degree. Thank you very very much for being part of my life… and oh yes, I still love to read up Real Analysis 😉

Gurudev speaks…

There are various online blogs and forums where some (misguided?) people post defamatory and inflammatory things about Guruji… He was asked about this in a recent Satsang, someone who happened to be there wrote an account… Here it is:

In a satsang at the Art of Living centre in Germany last night, someone asked Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: “Guruji, I have observed that Guruphiliac seems to follow your every move and then write negative things about you. Why are they doing this?”

This is the gist of what Guruji said: I have inherited an ancient lineage and my job is to further its cause. Neither by thought, nor through word, nor by deed, have I ever done any harm to anyone, nor will I ever do so in the future; it is simply not in my nature. Nobody can expose me because there is nothing to expose: I stand tall, clean and naked in front of the whole world.
I do whatever maximum good I can, and I inspire others to do so. These people who keep writing about me simply cannot leave me alone – they must be in deep love with me! (laughter) When they keep comparing me with other people all the time, I must have made a very deep impression on them. I cannot help it if they can’t get over me – that’s the way I am! If I am that bad and fake, they should simply be able to ignore me and move onto the truth –why are they are holding onto me, again and again?

If they are trying to teach me a lesson, if their intention is to correct me, then I’m sorry, I am incorrigible! (laughter)

If their idea is to stop people from coming to me, and if people do stop coming just by reading these blogs, then I really thank them; it is good for me, it reduces my responsibility! If they think I am doing this for publicity, they are unaware of the disadvantages of popularity. I pity them. Celebrities enjoy only popularity, but spiritual leaders have a huge responsibility with that popularity. People do not go to celebrities for guidance and blessings, but with spiritual leaders they do.

If they think I have no right to exist on this planet, then they can crucify me; I am afraid neither of death nor of being defamed. I am not afraid, because nothing can destroy me.

We do charity with the hard earned money from our courses. We are, of course, rich with people and with good character, and I am ready to share this wealth with anyone.
Lest they understand that their hatred is nothing but love standing upside down.

Pumpkin Soup

Peel and cut into medium chunky pieces a small pumpkin
Wash and cut into chunky pieces 1 medium sized potato (dont peel it)
Prep up some french beans (about 50 gms), a handful of green peas
Chop up 1 tomato as well
Mash up 1 clove of garlic (optional)

Put a pressure cooker on medium gas and add some oil and a dollop of butter, as soon as the butter has melted, add the garlic and cook till light brown. Add a tablespoon of garam masala and a tablespoon of dhania-jeera powder, you may of course vary these proportions according to your taste… Cook for a bit.

Now add all the other veggies, salt to taste and saute for 3-4 minutes on high flame

Add water to cover all the veggies by about 1 inch, you may add more or less depending on the consistency of the soup that you want finally. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles and simmer for 10 minutes on very low flame. Let the cooker cool down before you open it.

Use a hand blender and whirrrrr the cooked veggies until smooth, optionally adding some milk if you want a more liquid consistency for the soup… add a small blob of fresh cream to give a nice colour to the soup and a richer taste.

Serve hot with toasted buttered whole wheat bread!
